Professor: Racist remarks just GOP fodder

Racially charged comments made by  Senator Harry Reid, former President Bill Clinton and ousted Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich regarding President Barack Obama caused a media uproar this week.

However, in article that appeared in Tuesday’s edition of the Philadelphia Tribune, Temple University journalism professor Linn Washington said reaction to the statements is “much ado about nothing.”

“I think that this emphasis on racist words is ridiculous considering the fact that our society ignores racist policies,” Washington said. “What is more damaging a remark of the withdraw of millions of dollars from North Philadelphia? It’s much ado about nothing. Who’s raising this issue? The Republican Party — the party that’s been responsible for decades of racist policies so it’s disingenuous at best. Clinton presided over some of the most racist policies in years and now people are going to focus on an offhanded comment that he made. Ditto for Reid.”
